New Tool - Cintiq 21 UX 2

Whilst my brother is spending two years abroad. I've been lucky enough to get
a hands of his most prized tool. Cintiq 21UX 2

Guess I'll get to draw a lot more. My experience with it so far has been great! I haven't done computer-based drawing before and I can already see the advantages it brings. All the minor tweaks that you can do to  your drawing playing with proportions (Hard when you're drawing straight pen to paper).

Studying Industrial Design the mantra is to commit to your lines and to have them clean and crisp...
I think it's time to explore a different mantra :P
Whilst I can still achieve this on the Cintiq I'm happy that I can easily edit things too.

Watching my Plebs

Whilst waiting for Fallout 4 to land, I've got myself playing Fallout Shelter.

Familiar game mechanics but the fallout skin has actually made me stick with this game a while longer. Will I be addicted?! Stay tuned!

Spotify's Flat Design Logo

Just noticed Spotify applying a bit of flat design to their logo. From a slight gradient green to a darker green.

Function always over Form

Whilst having my morning coffee I had the chance to interact with this iconic coffe cup.

Elegant in its form, as I picked the cup up, I found myself straining to lift such weight with support from my finger and thumb.

I may actually be lifting this cup worngly but the physical affordance warrants some people (like me) to lift the cup as such. Why is the handle be so small?

I don't care that it looks more elegant   Let me enjoy my coffee without having to cramp up my hands every time I take a sip.

Sketcha Day - Exploring Modem Forms

Form factor

Quick Sketch looking at form factors for modems. As much as people want to hide their modems behind shelves, TVs or in the garage, it actually does affect the wifi strength in home.

The challenge is to make the Industrial Design of modems take on a neurtral form to compliment people's home decor

Honest Design - Huxtaburger

I've finally been able to give Huxtaburger a go but before deciding to go, I had gone to their website to check out their menu.

I was very impressed by their website. Very simple and a pleasure to navigate. A great example of honest design.

As a customer I want to know two things.
1. What's on the menu

2. Where do I get it?

The site does well to play like a mobile app and the interaction is quite nice. Kudos to the Huxtaburger Design team.

Sketcha Day - No Guts No Glory!

Defqon.1! No Guts No Glory!

I'm an avid fan of the Hard Style Culture particularly into Q Dance events and music. With inspiration from Pinterest, I thought I'd channel my excitement in some sketches.

Sketcha Day - Unboxing Experiences

A thought on unboxing experiences. What makes a great unboxing experience?

When you open up that new contraption for the first time. What do you expect to see? Is it the device that you've longed to see in the flesh? Is it a guide?

A great unboxing experience helps you use your device as quick and easy as possible without having you to think so hard.

If you've ever unboxed an apple or Samsung product, take note of the experience. How quickly were you able to start using the device?

Blast from the Past

Found this cleaning out the garage. My folio piece from final year Visual Communication Design in high school.
As far as u boxing experiences and a premium feel goes, I think I did alright. Awesome stuff past self!

During the time before the iPhone, there was a lot more to design on a device.
This was titled entity because it could be customised to suit your personal style. Following the custom Nokia case trend or a recent example, the Moto X, the shell was interchangeable and the LED lights could also change making for many combinations. This the tag line 'Entity, it's what you make of it...'

The feature here was that there was a music player mode (iPod style) and a multimedia mode in which the panels slide out revealing a bigger screen.

The screen and wheel controls will then notice this change and the control would update accordingly (think adaptive LED on the Samsung u900 which was my phone at the time)

More photos to come...

Poke Baubles

A little Christmas Challenge once again between Lai and I and we had to make each other Christmas baubles. Going for the simple design I went for something we both share even in our childhood. Pokemon!!

Using the Simple technique of sequins to foam ball I made a very time consuming but lovely set of poke, master and ultra balls that though not clear in this picture said 'I', 'Heart', 'U'.
Until next time something creative and awesome happens in my life! This is Garry from Studio Garthabarny!

Breaking the Dry Spell

Well an utter fail at the moment obviously with the sketch a day commitment and I seriously had not drawn until now. I guess my brother drawing as well as Lai helped me break the dry spell finally for drawings.

This drawing. Good intentions but failed execution. I had crated out all the parts but just failed on... Well you can tell.

I won't attempt the sketch a day program as right now, my lifestyle will change as I take up the next step that is full time work. So I will calibrate my time after a couple of weeks. For now I hope I've started my drawing juices again and upload any other pictures I happen to do.

Day 13 - Sketch art

Just a quick one I'm doing today of a anime type face. I was always a manga style drawer. Since I'll be working late I thought I'd knock this out now. Kinda went drunk on the lines for shading and the facial figure is quite feminine. Overall, a good 10 min sketch!

Day 12 - "Bingle" The Lancer

This time round I added a little perspective to establish the wheels and the result was a perspective that could not fit on an A4 page. Thought I'd end car week with a fitting tribute to my current car which I call Bingle. A good outcome compared to yesterday's flop. I guess I need to ease into concept car drawing. Know more about simple geometry lines of the present cars before I go line drunk on uber awesome concepts. Still. I would like to revisit car drawings but for the next week, I'll draw what I want :P

Day 11 - BMW Hybrid Concept

I have spent 30 minutes trying to upload this and it is just not my day here! First of all this does not do justice to the beautiful BMW concept everyone would know by now. And worse, the dam uploader doesn't want to rotate the picture! Very annoyed and so not my day but hey another day another drawing. Quite embarrassed to put this up but oh well! They can't all be awesome-ish

Day 10 - Draw from Nothing

Looking like a Celica which I guess is true. I left my IPad at Lai's house so I just drew from what I have learned so far without copying angles or referencing. Which is more so what I can remember so far. Which is the Celica or attempt of a Celica from yesterday. Any who! That's the drawing done today. Really need to focus on the Wheels and subtle line work for the front of the cars. Also tried the technique to erase the full look of the tires so the car doesn't look grounded. A lesson taught by Mark Wilken from uni.
Still a lot more to go but hey improving at least!

Day 9 - Toyota Celica

My first racing game Need for Speed Underground saw me fall instantly in love with the Celica SX. At the time my brother purchased the original Celica and them upgraded to the model above. The only thing I have to say is that I stuffed up the round shape of the hood. The overal perspective is quite off.

Day 8 - Toyota Tarago

My childhood family car, I thought I should pay tribute to the wonderful adventures we had as a family taking us to places such as Mildura, Mount Gambier, Blue lake. So much memories! I much loved the moon roof which opened wide so that we could stand up and stick our heads out catching the breeze. Good times.

This one was down to the wire and finished just minutes before midnight. I really don't like how I did the windows here really poor.

Happy Week Old! Day 7 - Mitsubishi iMiev

So I almost mis-spelled mieV... Oops. This was done within 45 minutes, still copied but with less copic detail. Even drawing this line by line, I still somehow skew the perspective. And the wheels?... Still, happy with the overall look. Still haven't tried to mix medias though I'm hopping the extra pop will come from that!

Found this car by googling "vroom car" just for kicks.

Car Week! Day 6 - Acura NSX

Not really a car nut but I do want draw my own concept cars some day! This is copied from an image I pulled typing car into google which turned out to be the NSX.

Taking a lot longer than my other sketches so far and with a shitty out of ink W5, I gave it a quick render. Difficult thing to establish when drawing a concept car from scratch for me is the perspective and all the details in the front and side of the car including the wheels! Damn I'm not a car person... Not yet!

Day 5 - Robotech

Anyone know where this is from? Thought my drawing today would come from my childhood. Ahh yes Robotech. One of the first animes I watched and probably the reason I like mechas, planes and transforming stuff. Well anywho I'm thinking of an entire picture for this and I only managed the line art. I hope I can return to this and work on it digitally.

If people don't think this counts as a a completed drawing then...

The shadow is a bit shitty but this was still copied but done within 20 minutes! Getting better. Maybe it is easy to skectch oh well!
